What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine, also known as botanical medicine or phytotherapy, is the use of plants for healing. This tradition dates back thousands of years and is rooted in every culture across the globe. From Western herbal medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to Celtic, European, and Indigenous systems. Herbalists use the various natural constituents of plants to support the body’s innate ability to heal, adapt, and restore balance.

Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, herbs are complex, whole-plant medicines that work in synergy with the body, gently guiding it toward homeostasis. They can be used to support digestion, the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, immunity, skin health, hormone balance, and more.

In Europe, knowledge was preserved and expanded by monks, midwives, and folk healers—many of whom worked with local wild plants to treat common ailments. Over time, this traditional knowledge became the foundation of modern pharmacology. In fact, around 25% of pharmaceutical drugs today are derived directly or indirectly from plant compounds.

Herbal medicine continues to thrive today, blending ancestral wisdom with modern science to offer holistic care that respects the body, the land, and the patient.

In Ireland, certain potent or interactive herbal medicines are not available for over-the-counter sale. These remedies can only be prescribed by a qualified herbalist following a professional consultation, to ensure safe and appropriate use.

Herbs work by supporting the vital functions of the body—enhancing rather than suppressing. A skilled herbalist considers the person as a whole, not just the symptoms. This means understanding your constitution, energetics (hot/cold, damp/dry), and underlying imbalances.. Contact below to book your consultation.
