6. Are Herbal Medicines Safe?

Herbal medicines can be used safely when they are appropriately selected, prepared and taken at the correct dose and for the appropriate purpose. However, natural does not automatically mean safe. Herbs can have side effects, contraindications and interactions with medicines or other supplements.

As part of your consultation, your herbalist will review your current medications, supplements, health history and individual circumstances to help ensure that any recommended herbs are appropriate for you. Particular care is needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as some herbs may not be suitable.

Following professional guidance and using the correct herb, preparation and dosage are important aspects of safe herbal medicine practice.

7. Can I take herbal medicine alongside prescription medication?

Sometimes herbal medicines can be used alongside prescription medication, but this needs to be considered on an individual basis. Some herbs can interact with medicines or affect how they are absorbed or processed by the body.

As part of your consultation, your current medications and supplements are reviewed when considering herbal recommendations. Please provide a complete and up-to-date list of everything you are taking, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines and supplements.

It is important to let your herbalist know if you start, stop or change any medication or supplement after your consultation, so that your herbal recommendations can be reviewed for suitability.

How long does herbal medicine take to work?

The time needed to experience changes with herbal medicine varies from person to person and depends on the individual, the nature and duration of the health concern, and the goals of treatment.

Some herbal preparations may be used over longer periods to support general vitality, resilience and wellbeing, where appropriate. For more specific concerns, you may notice changes in individual symptoms within a few weeks. For example, someone experiencing menstrual discomfort may notice an improvement in symptoms such as cramping within the first few weeks, while supporting longer-term hormonal balance and stability may require several months.

Herbal medicine works alongside the body’s own innate capacity to heal and regulate. Rather than trying to override or rush these natural processes, the aim is to provide appropriate support and allow the body time to respond.

Follow-up consultations provide an opportunity to monitor your progress, assess how you are responding and adjust your personalised herbal plan where appropriate.

Where appropriate, I prepare personalised herbal formulations based on your individual consultation. Your preparation can be made specifically for you at the dispensary at Herb Hive rather than relying solely on standard off-the-shelf products.

Herb Hive is based in Carrigeensallagh, Collooney, Co. Sligo, providing consultations for clients locally and from the surrounding area. For clients travelling from further afield, follow-up consultations may be available online, with repeat herbal preparations posted where appropriate.

Meet Mary Jane

A Sligo native, I left the medical device industry in 2023 after completing my Diplomas in Herbal Medicine and Naturopathy. I founded Herb Hive to provide personalised herbal medicine consultations and individually prepared herbal remedies in a welcoming clinical setting.

Alongside consultations, I also facilitate herbal education through foraging walks and practical days where participants can learn about making their own herbal preparations.
